NEW YORK: President’s XI of LI (PXI) held their nerve for the second time in a row and pulled off a thrilling two-wicket win, beating Spartans in finals of New York Tennis Ball Cricket League (NYTBCL) Summer 2020 T15 tournament held at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, NY on Sunday, September 6th, 2020. Earlier in the semi-finals, PXI beat KKNY in a low scoring thriller!

On a windy day, Vijay Kapoor, Captain of PXI won the toss and elected to bowl. Spartans lost Mitesh Patel 2(4) early as Dhwanil Shah disturbed the timber in second over. Dhwanil was at it again when he got Spartans captain Dilip Reddy 4(8), caught by Bhavin Maniar with score at 20/2 in 4 overs. Spartans needed some stability and Shridhar Singamshetty 20(26) tried his best to rotate the strike against tidy bowling by PXI. Shridhar was eventually run out going for a nonexistent single.

With Spartans requiring to change gears, Vishal Gaur 11(10) joined Madhur Katyal 16(18) in the middle and the duo put on together 23 run partnership for the 7th wicket taking the score to a respectable 71/8 in 15 overs. For PXI, Mustafa Moiz (3-0-12-2), Dhwanil Shah (3-0-12-2) and Biren Dhulia (3-0-17-2) were the pick of the bowlers.

In the chase, PXI got off to a good start with two openers Vijay Kapoor 12(11) and Bhavin Maniar 17(22)
Putting together 26 in 4 overs. However, Appa Vade of Spartans had other plans. He bowled excellent over taking out Vijay Kapoor caught and then disturbing timber of tournament highest run scorer Rajiv Nair 0(2). It was downhill for PXI for next 8 overs as they slipped from comfortable 26/0 in 4 overs to 52/8 by end of 12 overs. The game seemed to be heading in Spartan’s way.

That’s when the cool heads of Mustafa Moiz 19(23) and Raj Kumar 6(10) put on an unbeaten partnership of 20 runs, which ultimately won the cup for PXI. They waited for the loose deliveries and defended the good ones. This match will be remembered for a crucial 5-wide bowled at the penultimate over, which sealed the match PXI’s way. For Spartans, Appa Vade (3-0-15-3), Vamshi Lavang (3-0-11-2) and Vishal Gaur (2.4-0-9-2) bowled excellent spells. Mustafa Moiz was adjudged the Man of the match.

The entire PXI team and support staff ran on to the field when the winning runs were hit. The jubilation and celebration were very much evident. This was the first championship win for PXI, a closely knit team born just 1 year ago on the aspirations of Suresh Konappanavar and Manoj Samuel, funded and supported by Dr Aman Deep.
